Star quarterback Tom Brady has shown no sign of succumbing to Father Time after a blazing start to the 2021 season. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers look every bit the part of a Super Bowl-contending team. However, the Buccaneers may soon have an upgrade to their secondary.
Tom Brady guides Buccaneers to hot start to the 2021 season
The Buccaneers didn’t experience a Super Bowl lull to begin the 2021 campaign, winning their first two games.
Brady is the guiding light behind his stellar play, recording a league-leading nine touchdown passes, ranks fifth with 655 passing yards, and holds a 113.3 passer rating. The 44-year-old’s five-touchdown pass performance against the Atlanta Falcons made him the fifth quarterback in league history to record at least nine touchdown passes through the first two games of a season.
Despite the undefeated start, the Buccaneers may be inching toward bringing a former Pro Bowler aboard.

As the Buccaneers prepare for Week 3 action against the Los Angeles Rams, the team is exploring ways to improve the roster.
Shortly after placing starting cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting on the injured reserve, Tampa Bay may be moving closer to solidifying the secondary. Head coach Bruce Arians voiced on Monday that general manager Jason Licht has reached out to Richard Sherman.
“Jason’s reached out. We got to see,” Arians said via ESPN. “He’s got other things going on, too. Just a matter of, ‘I coach the ones that we got and let him handle the rest of that.’ We’ll kick the tires on some other guys, too. But it’s just a matter of, ‘No, we’ll talk and see, and if it’s the right fit, it’s the right fit and we’ll move on it.”
Sherman has remained without a new NFL team since he departed from the San Francisco 49ers this past offseason. The 33-year-old sits afloat in the free-agent market due to his pending legal problems. In July, he was arrested due to his involvement in an incident at his wife’s parents’ home located in Washington.
The former Pro Bowler is dealing with two counts of domestic violence – criminal trespass in the second degree and malicious mischief in the third degree. He’s also facing charges involving resisting arrest and driving while under the influence and reckless endangerment of roadway workers. Sherman chose to plead not guilty to all five charges.
The Buccaneers have shown no fear in bringing players aboard with legal issues. The team previously signed star wide receiver Antonio Brown last season after receiving an eight-game suspension. The NFL could levy down punishment on Sherman depending on the legal situation.
The Buccaneers could use his experience in the secondary as he’s proven to be one of the league’s top talents when healthy. He can step in as a dependable defensive back while providing much-needed leadership. At this point, it’s a situation the team will monitor closely.
Tampa Bay is currently dealing with issues in the secondary as starting cornerback Carlton Davis is dealing with a mild hamstring strain. Meanwhile, Jamel Dean has struggled in coverage, making the needed for additional stability in the secondary a must.
Eyeing another Super Bowl push
Shermans’ availability aside, the Buccaneers are off to a promising start in 2021.
Brady continues to prove he has plenty left in the tank to play at an elite level. Tampa Bay possesses a balanced roster that will play a significant factor in guiding toward another Super Bowl push.
The Week 3 matchup against the Rams will provide an early-season test that will further gauge the team’s status. Matthew Stafford has performed well through his first two games with Los Angeles while guiding the team to a 2-0 record.
Beyond that, Brady and the Buccaneers are heading in the right direction toward vying for another championship.
