Dale Earnhardt Jr. has a lot of stories involving Budweiser. As the main sponsor early in his NASCAR Cup Series career, the two-time Daytona 500 winner had a seemingly never-ending supply of suds that produced some entertaining times with his friends away from the track.
His partnership with the King of Beers also meant commercials. During an episode of the Dale Jr. Download, Earnhardt recalled a specific commercial when he had to kiss an attractive woman playing his girlfriend and how he wanted to know if she liked it.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a strong partnership with Budweiser
For years, NASCAR fans associated Budweiser with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the red No. 8 car. Not surprisingly, working with a beer sponsor comes with perks. For the young driver, that meant cases of beer delivered to his house. At one point, the consistent delivery of so much alcohol sent up a red flag at the local beer distributor.
During an episode of the Dale Jr. Download, former Dale Earnhardt Inc. executive Ty Norris recalled a time when he received a call asking what was going on with Earnhardt and all the beer.
“The most beer that he delivered to any retailer in the entire state of North Carolina is in Mooresville at Dale Jr.’s house. Is he selling it?” the distributor asked Norris.
“No, they are drinking it,” he assured him. During the story, Earnhardt provided clarification and insisted he had a lot of help drinking the beer. He also admitted during one New Year’s Eve party that his guests consumed about 150 cases of beer.
Junior kisses woman in commercial and then asks if it was good
As part of that partnership with Budweiser, Earnhardt filmed multiple commercials. When former publicist Jade Gurss appeared on the podcast, they revisited some of his work with Budweiser, and the driver remembered one commercial in particular.
“We read the script to the lipstick thing and we both were like, ‘That’s cool. That’s going to be a good one.’ And we hustled out there and we had a good time doing it. I remember we were filming Any Given Day, but I remember getting off the plane back home, and I was still sort of jazzed about, I’m like, ‘I can’t wait for everybody to see this new commercial. They’re going to love this.'”
Podcast co-host Mike Davis pointed out that Earnhardt had a kissing scene in the spot.
“You told the camera, go over there and ask if she thought the kiss was good,” Davis recalled.
“I was so nervous,” Earnhardt said. “I couldn’t believe it. I’m like, ‘I’m going to have to kiss somebody? Are y’all sure?’ It’s weird kissing somebody you don’t know.”
Budweiser pays tribute to Dale Earnhardt Jr.
In 2017 on the eve of his final Cup Series race, Budweiser produced a moving video tribute in honor of Dale Earnhardt Jr. The three-minute montage features some of his most memorable moments in the red No. 8 Chevrolet that he drove from 2000-07, starting with his first win at Texas Motor Speedway in April 2000.
The video included highlights of wins at The Winston in 2000 and the 2004 Daytona 500. One of the most emotional moments is Earnhardt’s July 2001 victory at Daytona International Speedway in the first race after his father’s death in the Daytona 500 earlier that year.
“We created this short film to pay tribute to Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his incredible career,” Ricardo Marques, the vice president of marketing for Budweiser, said in a release. “Budweiser has great memories of working with Junior and we will never forever his time spent in the Bud car. Thanks for the unforgettable moments, Junior.”
Earnhardt created many great memories in the Budweiser car as well as making the commercials. Some just happen to be more memorable than others.
